Scroll Chart Holder

This handy little item is a must-have, like wheels or a motor. You might see it by various names:

  • roll chart holder
  • scroll chart reader
  • enduro chart holder

Here's a picture of an empty roll chart holder for the supplied 2.25" paper rolls:

You can see it's pretty simple. Most clamp onto the bars with a simple metal band clamp. You pop off the front face, tape one end in, and start rolling. One tip is to run a strip of tape all the way down the back of the roll to strengthen the paper, especially handy if the weather is going to be damp. Another tip is, while navigating around, unwind the top before winding in the bottom.

One thing to consider is what to do if it gets dark. This can sometimes happen on the transit to the finish after the last racing stage. Here are several options for lighting, any one of them will work:

  • Drill a small hole in the back and insert a bulb or LED that will light the strip from behind. Add switches and dimmers as you please.
  • Bring a glow stick and use transparent packing tape to tape it right on top of the face.
  • Have a chin-light on your helmet, or a light built into a glove.

These holders are often not in stock at your local generic motorcycle accessory store. A variety of folks sell them on the Internet in the $20-$30 range. Generally they're all plastic and there aren't really any special features you need to look for. If you see "aluminum" or "motorized" you're looking at Dakar equipment, which is for the A5 size paper (about 5.5" wide) which absolutely isn't needed here.
