What equipment should a HAM radio volunteer have?
Typically, a good 2 meter (140Mhz) mobile radio (40+ watts) with a magnet mount antenna on your car is all you will need to help out a rally as a communicator. An HT (handheld transceiver / handy-talkie) is nice to have if you're out of the car, but often will not be enough on it's own to work an event with its small antenna and low power (5 watts).
Keep a copy of the programming guide handy as rallies often challenge your amateur radio skills!
