Micheal Hordijk started the rally by winning the "Get the Dust Off" trophy for bringing out a rally car that had lain dormant longer than any others. He gave some great rides on day one, but day two, the actual racing, wasn't mean to be. This is certainly a contender for quickest DNF ever as Michael pulls off the course after only fifteen or twenty feet.
His stage notes were something like "Start, left two into DNF, left two into 25 onto trailer."

There was dust, certainly! Good spacing kept it from impacting the racing, once we figured out the proper interval. A couple reruns were offered at the beginning of the day to square things away. But really, thanks to the volunteers for putting up with the hot dusty conditions all day!

Jim Kelly ran RallySolo for this event. In the background, #34 Dmitriy Martynov running well up the order. Kelly ended up taking a fantastic second. An unfortunate DNF for Martynov on the final stage, which he's going to make up for at the Magnum Opus Rally in two weeks.

Jeremiah and Crystal Puleo had a fantastic weekend. They gave the second most rides and ran and ran and ran all Saturday. On race day, on the final stage, it suddenly got quiet. Just a quick on-stage tire change later, and big smiles at the finish control brought home a finish!

Dedicated volunteer Dave Shindle was running the finish control. Each stage was three laps, and just to be sure, he had to count how many passes each race made. This picture was taken just before we showed up with paper and a clipboard to remedy the situation: there's only so much arm space!

HyperFest is all about having fun. Even the trophies reflect this attitude: From 8.5 ounces all the way up to 20 ounces, that's a lot of Red Bull to win! Behind them are Atlantic Rally Cup glasses. For the curious, the sub-text for the stickers on the awards is:
1st Place: 100% Most Awesomesauce
2nd Place: 100% RunnerUpSauce
3rd Place: 100% StillOnPodiumSauce

Micheal Gebrain running his Honda. Very proud of his Honda reliability, he gave the most rides of the day and then won the 2WD class the next day. And amazingly... all on stock suspension!

Eric Wages had a tough break. Really, this was, literally, a difficult thing to break. The axle nut was still attached to the shaft on the outside piece, but the spline area broke and then the bearing separated. After some resourceful parts swapping and 250 miles of driving around for extra pieces, Wages was ready for competition the next day, where he would win the Power Stage and qualify for the NASA National Rally Championship

Even when the rides ended a little too soon, the riders were excited about being in a car with a different kind of excitement. Here's driver Michael Horkijk (in the red shirt) sharing a thumbs up about a flat tire with his enthusiastic rider (in the orange loaner helmet).

All told, the rally drivers gave out about 130 rides on Saturday, the first day of the event. There was usually a backlog of folks waiting to jump in a car. Even when we told them 'It might be an hour before we get to you.' they responded with 'Rally rides was the whole reason I came to HyperFest. I got a ride last year and I don't want to miss it this year!'

Of course, there's WAY more going at HyperFest than just the rally rides. Car shows, drifting, track races, burnout competitions, motorcycle stunt shows, it's a huge celebration of all things motorized.

Michael O'Leary brought the Evo power to HyperFest. This mean machine looked and sounded super-strong! A tough stumble with the clutch slave cylinder ended the effort early.

HyperFest RallySprint takes place at the Summit Point Raceway. It's a beautiful racing complex with multiple tracks and a huge infrastructure. In recent years, the HyperFest event itself has attracted over 10,000 attendees. We're talking gate-counted, ticket-verified 10,000 plus people... it does turn into a bit of a zoo! And NASA Rally Sport is happy to add a little rally flavor to the madness.
